How I am growing oak in Round Wood on the Froyle Estate near Alton in Hampshire on a 70 to 75 year rotation in order to produce 3 to 4 metre veneer quality butts.
The four provenances of oaks donated by Woodland Heritage and planted two years ago are now starting to show their likes and dislikes of the conditions in this new wood in Hampshire.
A hectare of agricultural land at the top of a southwest slope became available after the wheat harvest. Its elevation was 150 metres and was basically clay with flint over chalk.
